How to Talk to Your Doctor

Talking to Your Doctor About Sleep Problems

Talking with your physician is the first step in determining if you have a sleep disorder. If you think you have a sleep disorder, it is important to communicate with your primary care physician and possibly obtain a referral to a sleep specialist.

One of the best tools to use is a basic account of your symptoms. Please use our “Do I need a sleep evaluation” questionnaire below to help you explain your symptoms. You may also keep a sleep account of how many times you get up during the night, if your spouse or partner has witnessed you stop breathing, and how many hours you sleep each night.

If you have something that you want to convey, write it down to go over with your physician. Many patients forget when they are in the physician’s office and don’t know how to explain their problem. Being prepared can make the difference between being diagnosed and not receiving any treatment because your physician does not know you have a problem.
