Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea is a chronic condition characterized by repetitive upper airway obstruction during sleep, leading to apneic episodes, hypoxemia and recurrent arousals from sleep. It has been estimated that 2% to 4% of middle-aged men and 1% to 2% of middle-aged women suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, and the rate is even higher in older adults. Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, particularly from hypertension, cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. Furthermore, the excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea can result in an increased risk for motor vehicle crashes or serious industrial accidents.

The opportunity for identification of individuals with obstructive sleep apnea ultimately falls in the hands of primary care physicians, as well as patient responsibility in cases of commercial driving and transportation. The Physicians East Sleep Center provides intensive investigation into underlying severity of apnea, comorbid sleep disorders, and a range of potential therapeutic options which can involve specialists from the world of pulmonary disease, dentistry, ENT, neurology and psychology. Our ability to singularly focus on patient's sleep problems, in the context of their overall health, allows for the best opportunity at alleviating associated fatigue and comorbidities. The cognitive impairment that has been demonstrated in up to 80% of individuals with sleep apnea, especially worse with aging, is also in most cases a reversible occurrence if it is related to the sleep disorder. We are specifically focused on initiating treatment modalities that correct both cognitive and cardiovascular dysfunction, as well as alleviating tiredness and fatigue. Please do not hesitate to contact physicians at the Physicians East Sleep Center for questions, concerns or referrals.
